SUMMARY:Community Paddle Boating at FDR Park
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Independence Seaport Museum for free paddle boating at FDR Park on select dates in the spring\, summer\, and fall! \nPaddle boats are an easy and safe way for families and people of all ages to explore Edgewood Lake\, just behind the FDR Park Boathouse. As you pedal around\, use the kid-friendly binoculars provided to spot turtles\, ducks\, blooming flowers\, and maybe even a great blue heron – the long-legged shorebird the boats are shaped after. This event is geared toward our FDR Park neighbors. \nChildren must be able to fit into a life jacket (30+ pounds) in order to participate. All minors must have an adult with them. \nWaivers will be provided and must be signed before participating. You can do this ahead of time by clicking the ‘sign up for event reminder’ button below. Please include everyone in your party on the form. This will also ensure that you receive any important weather updates that may affect the event. Please note\, clicking the ‘sign up for event reminder’ button does not guarantee a spot on a boat! There is often a line to get on the boats. If the wait time for boarding is longer than 30 minutes\, the line will close before the actual event end time of 2 PM. \nThere is no place to store belongings while out on the water\, so we recommend bringing a small bag/waterproof case to store them in. We suggest having at least two people on each boat to balance pedaling; boats cannot hold more than four people. \nTICKET PRICE: Free\, RSVP appreciated but not required

SUMMARY:FREE Street Movies by Scribe Video
DESCRIPTION:Join us outdoors at The Yard on John Coltrane Street for a curated night of local\, international\, and award-winning short films\, plus discussion and live music! This event is presented in partnership with the Strawberry Mansion CDC. \nFilm Program\nBlack Journal: Alice Coltrane (USA / 1970 / 16 MIN)\nDir. Stan Lathan\nFilmed only three years after her husband’s death\, Alice Coltrane reflects on the legacy of John Coltrane\, on her family\, her spirituality and her music. This 16mm color film print is a short documentary made for a segment of National Education Television’s Black Journal television program. \nFletcher Street (USA / 2026 / 35 MIN)\nDir. Jannat Gargi and David Darg\nIn North Philadelphia\, the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club offers a vital safe haven for at-risk youth. Their joy and sense of freedom as they ride horses majestically through the streets of their neighborhood is as affirming as the trust\, discipline and emotional resilience they build through their close bonds with the horses. \nBack of House (USA / 2025 / 12 MIN)\nDir. David Dominguez and Paul Overstrom\nFormerly incarcerated individuals in Philadelphia forge life-changing bonds over pizza\, rebuilding their lives and supporting families with hope and resilience. A warm and authentic affirmation of possibility and new beginnings. \nWhy I Love You: Meet The Ultimates (USA / 2026 / 15 min)\nDirected by Shontel Horne\n“Why I Love You: Meet The Ultimates” is a short documentary about The Ultimates\, a vocal group formed by childhood friends in 1970s West Philadelphia under the mentorship of visionary Evetta Valentine. After recording the ballad “Why I Love You” at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios and releasing it on Valentine’s independent label\, the song faded into obscurity and the members of the group went their separate ways\, only for the song to be rediscovered decades later nearly 3\,000 miles away within the California Chicano lowrider scene\, where it became a cherished cultural gem. Through intimate interviews with group members Monica Thornton and Debra Gunn Herbin and archival material\, the film explores ambition\, sisterhood and rediscovery and highlights how one timeless song connected two distant communities and gave The Ultimates a long-overdue second chance.
