SUMMARY:Take a Hike on the Trolley Trail!
DESCRIPTION:Taken from the original event posting: \nJoin Kevin Roche\, Fairmount Park Conservancy staff member\, hike leader\, and Trolley Trail enthusiast for a hike through the park’s fascinating past and present! The Fairmount Park Trolley operated in East & West Park from 1896-1946 providing a reliable and enjoyable means of accessing park amenities. Explore the physical remains of what is now a hidden trolley network including massive stone tunnels and bridge abutments along this 4 mile loop hike. \nMore about the Trolley Trail: \nFairmount Park Conservancy–along with its key partners at Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) and the Belmont Plateau Trails Alliance (BPTA)–have been working to develop the Trolley Trail while pursuing key goals: reducing adverse impacts on habitat and preserving the single track mountain bike trails. The new Trolley Trail will wend its way close to bridge abutments and through tunnels dating back to 1897. Future phases will bring signage\, maps and trail blazes to guide users through the vast reaches of West Fairmount Park once only accessible via the trolley. Read more here: https://myphillypark.org/trolley-trail-construction/ \nEstimated distance: 4 mile loop\nLevel: moderate\nTerrain: mainly hilly trails

SUMMARY:Anna C. Verna Playground Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:Taken from the original event posting: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy\, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation\, and Friends of FDR Park on August 26th to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting and public grand opening of Anna C. Verna Playground in FDR Park! Families are invited to swing\, climb\, and explore this fully inclusive play space designed for all ages and abilities. We hope to see you there! \nThe event caps a year-long building process following last July’s groundbreaking celebration. The completion of this playground is an incredible accomplishment in its own right\, and also one more step forward in the multi-phase\, multi-decade FDR Park Plan. \nThe FDR Park Plan seeks to balance nature\, water\, and human activity into a world-class public space. Named in honor of the late former City Council President Verna — the first and only woman to date to lead City Council — the Anna C. Verna Playground is one facet of this plan\, bringing state-of-the-art nature-based play equipment for people of all ages and all abilities. \nThe playground features a 20-swing mega-swing set; log and boulder scrambles; rolling hills with slides\, and two massive tree trunks incorporated into tree houses. In addition to the play structures\, there are nine picnic sites and a picnic pavilion. \nThe playground’s cork-based surface is nearly 100% water permeable and has been graded to mitigate flooding — something users of the current nearby play space are all too familiar with. These environmental considerations help ensure park visitors can enjoy the space for years to come. \nWe can’t wait to see you and your families for the FIRST of many fun-filled days of play at this incredible playground!
