DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a 2.5-mile walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood. \nParkside. The name says it all – it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture. \nTour highlights include:\n-Centennial Exposition model in Please Touch Museum\n-Smith Memorial Arch\n-Parkside Apartments (when built it was one of the tallest apartment buildings in the city)\n-Christ Community Baptist Church (built from an old synagogue)\n-Lansdowne Apartment Building (built in 1897)\n-Centennial Commons\n-Philadelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park and mural \nEstimated distance: about 2.5 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: mainly flat sidewalks/trails

DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy for a labyrinth-making workshop followed by a guided hike in East Fairmount Park on July 25 from 6:00-8:30 PM. \nWe’ll start out by working together to create an intricate but temporary labyrinth on the grass in front of the historic Mount Pleasant Mansion. Led by Athena Dugan\, the Philadelphia representative of the International Labyrinth Society\, this unique workshop will teach you the history and techniques of making a labyrinth. \nNext\, ecotherapist and Lenape language keeper\, Krista Nelson\, will lead us on a 1.5-mile hike along the Boxers’ Trail where we’ll focus on intentions set in the winter and spring. Those intentions are like seeds in our personal gardens of promise. Planted in the fertile soil of winter’s darkness\, they withstood the cold and rooted deep. In the spring\, they sprouted to face both the rain and the winds of change. Now is the time to let them shine in the summer light. We’ll stop by Randolf Creek where we can release into the water all that we no longer need. And with the setting sun\, we’ll share a fun tribute to the five major nature elements.

From homemade rafts to sea kayaks\, Jason loves to be on the water in anything that floats. He spent much of his life paddling a canoe until he discovered kayaking about fourteen years ago. He appreciates both whitewater and flatwater kayaking for their respective exhilarating and relaxing qualities. Jason enjoys sharing his passion for being outdoors with others and reconnecting people with the rivers they often appreciate but never experience. SUMMARY:Juneteenth Group Ride with The Enterprise Center
DESCRIPTION:The ride will be a slow-paced bicycle group ride beginning and ending at the Malcolm X Park Indego Station located at the northeast corner of 52nd St. and Larchwood Ave. in the West Philly section of Philadelphia. The ride will be a 2.5-mile loop exploring local black-owned organizations\, and businesses\, and celebrating Juneteenth in West Philly. We will be stopping for an informational session with the speaker from The Enterprise Center about the rich history of 52nd Street and ending back at the Indego Station.  \nEvery ride is led by a trained staff member of the Bicycle Coalition and all participants are expected to follow the Rules of the Road. \n     -This ride will be beginner-friendly and at a leisurely pace \n     -Helmets will be provided for Indego riders \n     -You must be 16 years of age to ride an Indego E-Bike \n     -We will be riding with motor vehicles  \n     -Water\, snacks\, and swag will be provided \nPlease let ride leaders know about any medical conditions. \n  \nIndego riders should plan to stay with the group for the entire ride. \n*Height Restrictions: The bikes we use for the class are recommended for 5’2″ and up. SUMMARY:Discover Strawberry Mansion: Neighborhood and East Park Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Judith Robinson for a 2.5-mile walking tour to learn about the past\, present\, and future of Strawberry Mansion and nearby East Park. \nStrawberry Mansion has always had a close connection to the park. In fact\, the neighborhood is named after a prominent place in the park\, Historic Strawberry Mansion. Similar to Parkside on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Strawberry Manson is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes and apartment buildings facing the park. It’s a neighborhood that has lived many lives through the years\, from its beginnings as an 18th-century rural retreat\, to its 19th-century industrial boom with a proliferation of factories and rowhouses\, to the 20th-century that experienced a demographic shift from a primarily Jewish enclave to an established African-American community. Judith will highlight the neighborhood’s history as a hub of cultural activity — the home to artists such as Henry Ossawa Tanner and Dox Thrash\, musicians such as John Coltrane and Meek Mill\, and community groups such as Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club\, the horse riders who inspired the hit movie Concrete Cowboy. \nThe tour begins with the colonial homes that first defined the area and then visits a variety of important park sites such as Woodford Mansion\, the Medicine Man statue\, the old concession stand\, and the recently installed horseshoe pits. Next\, Judith will lead us down 33rd Street\, East Park’s parkside promenade to see B’nai Jeshuran synagogue/Cornerstone Baptist Church\, Mander Recreation Center\, and the John Coltrane house. The tour will end at a relatively new addition to the park and neighborhood\, The Discovery Center at the Strawberry Mansion Reservoir. \nEstimated distance: about 2.5 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: mainly flat sidewalks/trails \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Judith Robinson is a longtime resident\, historic preservationist\, and real estate broker with years of experience as a community advocate and educator. She is a researcher and docent at the Historic Church of the Advocate and is the director of the Strawberry Mansion Civic Association. In 2021\, Judith helped form the Friends of The Henry O.
