SUMMARY:PARK AFTER DARK: Moonwalk + Stargazing Party
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a two-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation.  \nWe’ll start by using the moonlight to guide us on a short hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail – a wooded trail that runs high above Kelly Drive and offers some views of the Schuylkill River below. Learn a little about the history of the area as well as the nocturnal animals that call the forest home. \nNext\, we’ll turn our attention to the moon itself by ending the hike with a guided moon and planet or star observation\, depending on the month. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets or stars and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nEstimated distance: roughly two miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: combination of flat open parkland and hilly trails \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Buddy Muhler is a passionate astronomer and science educator. He has over 15 years of experience operating telescopes and educating the public on astronomy\, first at The Franklin Institute and now in his current position with The Academy of Natural Sciences.

SUMMARY:Parkside Past\, Parkside Present: Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a 2.5-mile walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood. \nParkside. The name says it all – it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture. \nTour highlights include:\n-Centennial Exposition model in Please Touch Museum\n-Smith Memorial Arch\n-Parkside Apartments (when built it was one of the tallest apartment buildings in the city)\n-Christ Community Baptist Church (built from an old synagogue)\n-Lansdowne Apartment Building (built in 1897)\n-Centennial Commons\n-Philadelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park and mural \nEstimated distance: about 2.5 miles\nLevel: easy to moderate\nTerrain: mainly flat sidewalks/trails

SUMMARY:Guided Hike + Labyrinth Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy for a labyrinth-making workshop followed by a guided hike in East Fairmount Park on July 25 from 6:00-8:30 PM. \nWe’ll start out by working together to create an intricate but temporary labyrinth on the grass in front of the historic Mount Pleasant Mansion. Led by Athena Dugan\, the Philadelphia representative of the International Labyrinth Society\, this unique workshop will teach you the history and techniques of making a labyrinth. \nNext\, ecotherapist and Lenape language keeper\, Krista Nelson\, will lead us on a 1.5-mile hike along the Boxers’ Trail where we’ll focus on intentions set in the winter and spring. Those intentions are like seeds in our personal gardens of promise. Planted in the fertile soil of winter’s darkness\, they withstood the cold and rooted deep. In the spring\, they sprouted to face both the rain and the winds of change. Now is the time to let them shine in the summer light. We’ll stop by Randolf Creek where we can release into the water all that we no longer need. And with the setting sun\, we’ll share a fun tribute to the five major nature elements.

SUMMARY:Sunset on the Schuylkill: Guided Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Hidden River Outfitters for a picturesque two-mile guided kayak tour on the Schuylkill River. \nThe tour departs from the Walnut Street dock along the Schuylkill River Trail and heads upriver to the Fairmount Water Works\, where you’ll experience a rarely-seen perspective of these historic structures from the water below. Learn interesting facts about the history of the park while enjoying spectacular views of the city skyline at sunset. \nNo gear or kayaking experience necessary — kayaking equipment and instruction provided. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Jason Mifflin has owned and operated Hidden River Outfitters since June 2010. From homemade rafts to sea kayaks\, Jason loves to be on the water in anything that floats. He spent much of his life paddling a canoe until he discovered kayaking about fourteen years ago. He appreciates both whitewater and flatwater kayaking for their respective exhilarating and relaxing qualities. Jason enjoys sharing his passion for being outdoors with others and reconnecting people with the rivers they often appreciate but never experience. Jason loves to get folks out on the water\, regardless of their experience\, and expose them to paddling. Also\, as a native of Philadelphia\, he enjoys recounting the history and function of many of the areas that we encounter on our tours.
