SUMMARY:Philadelphia Fringe Festival
DESCRIPTION:The first Philadelphia Fringe Festival was presented in 1997 by the organization now known as FringeArts\, with the intention of providing opportunities for contemporary performing artists to connect with audiences in an exciting social environment. The first Festival took over Philadelphia’s Old City for five days\, and featured 60 performing groups that presented their work in theaters\, nightclubs\, galleries\, alleys\, abandoned buildings and at least one parked car. \nToday\, the annual Philadelphia Fringe Festival features more than 1\,000 performances by national\, international and Philadelphia-based artists of all disciplines. For 3 weeks\, these innovators fill the public and private spaces across the city with nonstop\, wild creativity for audiences of more than 40\,000. \nIncluded in the festival are hundreds of independently produced performances and events\, work presented by partnering Festival Hubs and producers\, and a slate of programs curated by FringeArts. In the true spirit of the international “Fringe” movement\, there is no limit to the ways that artists and audiences can participate in and experience the festival.

Known as PARKing) Day\, this annual event re-imagines the possibilities of 160 square feet of public space. The event celebrates parks and other public spaces in cities across the country\, and raises awareness of the need for more pedestrian-friendly spaces in our urban areas.

The family-friendly selection of movies will be accompanied by an all-day food and craft market in the boathouse\, featuring the Mercado de Latinas — a  vendor collective started during the pandemic to support women entrepreneurs. Process-based artist Eugenio Salas will lead cooking demonstrations on his Communal Griddle** — a fogón-style stove made from waste materials that utilizes upcycled ingredients. In addition to live cooking\, the boathouse will have environmental art installations and interactive activities that promise to bring people together through the power of food and art! \nThere will be lawn games\, live music\, prizes\, food trucks\, and more at ¡CineMÁS! The movie and performances are free. The food trucks and market are pay-as-you-go. We welcome all to join us at this inclusive movie night and market that celebrates the language\, traditions\, and vibrant cultures of the Spanish-speaking world and the immigrant communities of South Philadelphia. \n**The Communal Griddle\, winner of ARTisPHL\, a public art competition sponsored by The James L. Knight Foundation and the Philadelphia Housing Development Corporation\, brings communities together through the power of food. Created by artist Eugenio Salas\, the series combines traditional cooking with improvisational design to offer a unique and immersive culinary experience. The Communal Griddle project consists of a series of events hosted in urban gardens and parks\, each featuring local community leaders cooking on a stove made from waste materials and utilizing upcycled ingredients. Each event features live cooking\, environmental art\, and interactive activities.

This hike will help you rekindle your love of nature and find strength and companionship in a community of fellow nature lovers. \nAs a 6th generation Lenape grandmother\, Krista honors the Lenape tradition of interconnectedness and reverence for nature. A Lenape language keeper\, Krista is working to revitalize this endangered indigenous language and unlock embedded codes to Lenape culture for a people and a planet in dire need of decolonizing hearts and minds. \nWe will hike for about 2.5 miles over mainly hilly trails\, stopping to listen and closely observe the natural surroundings. Our journey will lead us to several small tributary creeks\, where we will meditate accompanied by the reassuring rhythmic sounds of the flowing water. We will join in with the sound of the creek with our own spontaneous humming and whistling and in this way\, show our love for the water. Krista calls this practice of listening to the water and reciprocating with sound\, “Creek Drinking” (not literally of course!). \nThis event will connect you to nature and allow you to find your breath in tune with the creek’s flow so you can let troublesome thoughts wash away downstream. It will also help you develop a deeper appreciation for the Lenape — the first inhabitants and stewards of these lands.

SUMMARY:Anna C. Verna Playground Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy\, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation\, and Friends of FDR Park on October 21st to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting and public grand opening of Anna C. Verna Playground in FDR Park! Families are invited to swing\, climb\, and explore this fully inclusive play space designed for all ages and abilities. We hope to see you there! \nThe event caps a year-long building process following last July’s groundbreaking celebration. The completion of this playground is an incredible accomplishment in its own right\, and also one more step forward in the multi-phase\, multi-decade FDR Park Plan. \nThe FDR Park Plan seeks to balance nature\, water\, and human activity into a world-class public space. Named in honor of the late former City Council President Verna — the first and only woman to date to lead City Council — the Anna C. Verna Playground is one facet of this plan\, bringing state-of-the-art nature-based play equipment for people of all ages and all abilities. \nThe playground features a 20-swing mega-swing set; log and boulder scrambles; rolling hills with slides\, and two massive tree trunks incorporated into tree houses. In addition to the play structures\, there are nine picnic sites and a picnic pavilion. \nThe playground’s cork-based surface is nearly 100% water permeable and has been graded to mitigate flooding — something users of the current nearby play space are all too familiar with. These environmental considerations help ensure park visitors can enjoy the space for years to come. \nWe can’t wait to see you and your families for the FIRST of many fun-filled days of play at this incredible playground!

SUMMARY:Little Sit: Accessible for All Birdwatching
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nFairmount Park Conservancy is thrilled to partner with In Color Birding Club\, Feminist Bird Club Philly\, Pennsylvania Center for Adapted Sports (PCAS)\, and Philly Queer Birders for a special morning of birding on October 22 from 8:00–11:00 AM. This event is intentionally accessible to BIPOC\, the LGBTQ+ community\, and those with disabilities. \nBirders seek out diversity in birds\, looking for an array of colors\, sizes\, ages\, origins\, etc. Thankfully\, there’s a movement underway among birders to similarly celebrate diversity in our fellow humans. All are welcome! We encourage people with all skill levels to attend (even if you have never been birding). \nHalloween costumes are welcome! You’re welcome to show up at any time between 8:00–11:00 AM and stay for as long or as short as you want. We’ll have a few light snacks and encourage people to bring outside chairs\, picnic blankets\, or anything that will make you comfortable spending a morning birding in one location (rather than walking). We’ll have name tags where you can write your name and pronouns if you want so you can easily meet other birding friends. After all\, birds of a feather flock together! \nAccessibility notes are listed in the ‘Know Before You Go’ and ‘Parking/Getting There’ sections below; however\, if you have any other questions\, requests\, or needs\, please reach out to programs@myphillypark.org. \nWHAT IS A “LITTLE SIT”? \nThe Little Sit is our answer to a typically day-long\, stationary birding event called a “big sit\,” where groups try to see as many birds in one location as possible. It’s also a departure from our normal format of taking a bird hike where a lot of terrain is covered and we go to the birds. Instead\, with the Little Sit\, we find a stationary position and let the birds come to us! \nAbout Partner Organizations \n\nIn Color Birding Club is an organization founded in 2021 to make the birding experience a positive one for BIPOC folks and their allies. This includes: organizing inclusive events\, giving back to underserved communities of color\, and inspiring youth.\nPhilly Queer Birders started in March 2021 as a way to create queer community\, learn about our feathered friends\, and explore all the great birding that Philadelphia has to offer. They typically meet up monthly and have held events at FDR Park\, John Heinz NWR\, The Woodlands\, and more.\nFeminist Bird Club was founded by Molly Adams in 2016 as a way to leverage both their passion for birds and their passion for social justice into a cohesive whole. Since then\, the Feminist Bird Club has expanded to chapters across North America and in the Netherlands.\nPennsylvania Center for Adapted Sports has been a leader in providing adapted sports to persons with disabilities for decades. Administered from its office on Boathouse Row\, PCAS currently operates 13 sport and wellness programs year-round\, with a focus on building inclusive communities with barrier-free and supportive settings.

SUMMARY:Discover Strawberry Mansion: Neighborhood and East Park Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Judith Robinson on October 22 from 10:00 AM–12:30 PM for a 2.5-mile walking tour to learn about the past\, present\, and future of Strawberry Mansion and nearby East Park. \nStrawberry Mansion has always had a close connection to the park. In fact\, the neighborhood is named after a prominent place in the park\, Historic Strawberry Mansion. Similar to Parkside on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Strawberry Mansion is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes and apartment buildings facing the park. It’s a neighborhood that has lived many lives through the years\, from its beginnings as an 18th-century rural retreat\, to its 19th-century industrial boom with a proliferation of factories and rowhouses\, to the 20th-century that experienced a demographic shift from a primarily Jewish enclave to an established African-American community. Judith will highlight the neighborhood’s history as a hub of cultural activity – the home to artists such as Henry Ossawa Tanner and Dox Thrash\, musicians such as John Coltrane and Meek Mill\, and community groups such as Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club\, the horse riders who inspired the hit movie Concrete Cowboy. \nThe tour begins with the colonial homes that first defined the area and then visits a variety of important park sites such as the Dell Music Center\, the Medicine Man statue\, the old concession stand\, and the recently installed horseshoe pits. Next\, Judith will lead us down 33rd Street\, East Park’s parkside promenade to see B’nai Jeshurun Synagogue/Cornerstone Baptist Church\, Mander Recreation Center\, and the John Coltrane house. The tour will end at a relatively new addition to the park and neighborhood\, The Discovery Center at the Strawberry Mansion Reservoir.

SUMMARY:PARK AFTER DARK: Moonwalk & Stargazing Party
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin us for a guided moonwalk ahead of the appearance of October’s full moon. According to the Farmers Almanac\, October’s moon is called the “Hunter’s Moon” because it signaled the time to go hunting in preparation for the cold winter ahead. Native American tribes refer to it as the “Rice Drying Moon”\, “Falling Leaves Moon”\, or “Migration Moon” signifying the transition between seasons for all animals.\n \nFirst\, we’ll use the moonlight to guide us on a short hike on the Lemon Hill Rim Trail\, appreciating nature lit by the glowing moon. Next we’ll turn our attention to the moon itself by ending the hike with a guided moon and planet observation. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles\, point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss!

SUMMARY:Parkside Past\, Parkside Present: Neighborhood and Centennial District Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a special walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood on October 28 from 10:00 AM—12:30 PM. \nParkside. The name says it all — it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture. \nTour highlights include: \n\nCentennial Exposition model in Please Touch Museum\nSmith Memorial Arch\nParkside Apartments. (when built it was one of the tallest apartment buildings in the city)\nChrist Community Baptist Church (built from an Old synagogue)\nLansdowne Apartment Building built in 1897\nCentennial Commons\nPhiladelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park and mural
