SUMMARY:Day of the Dead Celebration: Community Art Workshop with Cesar Viveros
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin artist Cesar Viveros at FDR Park on Thursday\, October 22 from 4–6 PM to help prepare the Día de los Muertos art installation for Saturday night’s Gran Fiesta de los Muertos. \nThis is a free\, drop-in workshop so come anytime between the hours listed above to meet the artist\, to learn more about Día de los Muertos and Mexican cultural traditions\, and to help construct the art installation. Complimentary drinks and snacks will be available. \nThis event is for adults only. It will take place outside so please dress for the weather and wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy. RSVP is appreciated so we can anticipate space and material needs. \nABOUT CESAR VIVEROS: Cesar Viveros Herrera has spent over three decades creating public art in the United States and his native Mexico. Cesar has worked with many Philadelphia art organizations\, including Mural Arts and the Fleisher Art Memorial. His public work has been inspired by the communities he has served throughout the years\, to whom he has become the extended voice of their particular ideology\, recurring primarily on documentary work that helped him to visually articulate these individual stories to be exposed to a broader audience. Aztec dances and ceremonies\, miniature altars\, sculptures\, fresco paintings\, mosaics\, and feather work are some signature elements of his work outside murals.

SUMMARY:Parkside and Centennial District Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a two-mile walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood. \nParkside. The name says it all – it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture. \nTour highlights include:\n-Smith Memorial Arch\n-Parkside Apartments (when built it was one of the tallest apartment buildings in the city)\n-Christ Community Baptist Church (built from an old synagogue)\n-Lansdowne Apartment Building (built in 1897)\n-Centennial Commons\n-Philadelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park and mural \nSPECIAL OCTOBER 18 TOUR: Our October Parkside Walking Tour will include a visit to the Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center. Shofuso is a nonprofit organization that has inspired mutual curiosity\, understanding\, and collaboration between Japan and Philadelphia for more than 30 years through art\, business\, and culture.

SUMMARY:Park after Dark: Moonwalk + Stargazing
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a one-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation in East Fairmount Park.  \nWe’ll start by using the moonlight to guide us on a short hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets or stars and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Buddy Muhler is a passionate astronomer and science educator. He has over 15 years of experience operating telescopes and educating the public on astronomy\, first at The Franklin Institute and now in his current position with The Academy of Natural Sciences.
