SUMMARY:Community Paddle Boating at FDR Park
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Independence Seaport Museum for free paddle boating at FDR Park on select dates in the spring\, summer\, and fall! \nPaddle boats are an easy and safe way for families and people of all ages to explore Edgewood Lake\, just behind the FDR Park Boathouse. As you pedal around\, use the kid-friendly binoculars provided to spot turtles\, ducks\, blooming flowers\, and maybe even a great blue heron – the long-legged shorebird the boats are shaped after. This event is geared toward our FDR Park neighbors. \nChildren must be able to fit into a life jacket (30+ pounds) in order to participate. All minors must have an adult available to sign for them. \nWaivers will be provided and must be signed before participating. You can do this ahead of time by clicking the ‘sign up for event reminder’ button below. Please include everyone in your party on the form. This will also ensure that you receive any important weather updates that may affect the event. Please note\, clicking the ‘sign up for event reminder’ button does not guarantee a spot on a boat! There is often a line to get on the boats. If the wait time for boarding is longer than 30 minutes\, the line will close before the actual event end time of 2:00 PM. \nThere is no place to store belongings while out on the water\, so we recommend bringing a small bag/waterproof case to store them in. We suggest having at least two people on each boat to balance pedaling; boats cannot hold more than four people.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Sesqui-Centennial: A History of FDR Park Walk & Talk with Thomas Keels
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy’s John Sigmund\, Director of Partnerships and Sponsorships\, and local historian Thomas Keels\, author of Sesqui! Greed\, Graft\, and the Forgotten World’s Fair of 1926\, for a lecture and walk focused on the history of South Philadelphia’s beloved FDR Park. \nIn the early 20th century\, the site of current-day FDR Park became League Island Park\, part of a grandiose development scheme called the ‘South Philadelphia Improvements’. The Olmsted Brothers\, sons of renowned Central Park designer Frederick Law Olmsted\, were hired to transform the swamps of South Philadelphia into a natural wonder. Then\, in 1926\, the park was chosen to host the world’s fair\, the Sesquicentennial International Exposition. While there are few physical remnants left from the Sesquicentennial\, it brought the landscape closer to what we know today. \nWe’ll start off with a 45-minute presentation inside of the American Swedish Historical Museum\, which itself has ties to the Sesquicentennial\, before transitioning to a walk and talk through the north end (Pattison Avenue adjacent) of the park. On the walk\, we’ll highlight points of park plans’ past and future\, stopping at places such as the FDR Park Boathouse\, the new Gateway Plaza\, and the site of the Sesquicentennial’s ‘High Street’\, a popular exposition built by the Women’s Committee near present-day Pattison Lagoon. \nThis program is offered in partnership with the American Swedish Historical Museum. Visit the link above to find out more about the museum and its programs.

SUMMARY:Park after Dark: Moonwalk + Stargazing
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a 1.5-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation in West Fairmount Park. \nWe’ll start by using the moonlight to guide us on a hike of the historic Trolley Trail\, which roughly follows the route of the old Fairmount Park Trolley that operated from 1896-1946. Learn a little about the history of the trail and the nocturnal animals that call the park home. \nNext\, we’ll turn our attention to the sky with a guided moon and planet observation. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets or stars and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss!

SUMMARY:Ride of Silence
DESCRIPTION:For the past 22 years\, cyclists throughout Greater Philadelphia have come together to ride silently in honor of riders killed or injured by motorists. This ride will start at the North apron of City hall with a short memorial ceremony and slow bike ride that will travel an 8-mile route at 9.5 miles per hour through Center City before ending at the Art Muserum for a meorial bike lift. The ride occurs rain or shine.

SUMMARY:Trolley Trail Run
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and YAP (Young and Active Philly) or a 4.5-mile trail run along West Fairmount Park’s historic Trolley Trail. Whether you’re training for an upcoming race\, looking to connect with other runners\, or just want to get to know the trail system better\, this run series provides the perfect opportunity. \nEach trail run will be led by a Fairmount Park Conservancy staff person\, in partnership with local run club leaders (see schedule below). At a few points along the run\, we’ll stop and talk about the past and present of the Trolley Trail\, which roughly follows the route of the old Fairmount Park Trolley that operated from 1896-1946. We’ll even run through some of the physical remains of what is now a hidden trolley network. \nEach run will have multiple pace groups; however\, in order to finish before sunset\, runners should be able to consistently run for 4.5 miles on trails. While this run series is in partnership with local run clubs\, you do not need to be part of the run club to attend. Each event will be a mix of runners from that club and runners from the general public. Join for one run or for all four!

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Guided Hike: Tree Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Andrew Kirkpatrick\, Urban Greening Coordinator with Parks and Recreation’s Farm Philly Program\, for a 1.5-mile tree identification hike around Concourse and Centennial Lakes in West Fairmount Park. \nFrom sweetgums to tulip poplars to a variety of oaks— our urban landscapes are teeming with a variety of tree species. SUMMARY:Parkside and Centennial District Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a two-mile walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood. \nParkside. The name says it all – it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture.

Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands.
