SUMMARY:Second Saturday Guided Hike: Tree Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Andrew Kirkpatrick\, Urban Greening Coordinator with Parks and Recreation’s Farm Philly Program\, for a 1.5-mile tree identification hike around Concourse and Centennial Lakes in West Fairmount Park. \nFrom sweetgums to tulip poplars to a variety of oaks— our urban landscapes are teeming with a variety of tree species. Concourse Lake\, in particular\, is a dedicated 14-acre Native Plant Park with over 100 trees from roughly 25 different species. On this hike\, we’ll learn to identify trees based on leaves\, branches\, and bark. We’ll take time to observe the body language of trees\, why they grow the way they do\, and what we can learn about the life of the forest. \nThis hike is part of our Second Saturday Guided Hike Series. These hikes occur from 10 AM–12 PM on the second Saturday of every month (April–November). Second Saturday hikes are at various locations.

SUMMARY:Parkside and Centennial District Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a two-mile walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood. \nParkside. The name says it all – it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture.

SUMMARY:Park after Dark: Moonwalk + Stargazing
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a 1.5-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation in West Fairmount Park. \nWe’ll start by using the moonlight to guide us on a hike of the historic Trolley Trail\, which roughly follows the route of the old Fairmount Park Trolley that operated from 1896-1946. Learn a little about the history of the trail and the nocturnal animals that call the park home. \nNext\, we’ll turn our attention to the sky with a guided moon and planet observation. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets or stars and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss!

SUMMARY:Trolley Trail Hike
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy for a guided 4.5-mile hike to learn about the Trolley Trail’s fascinating past and present. The Fairmount Park Trolley operated in East and West Park from 1896 to 1946\, providing a reliable and enjoyable means of accessing park amenities. Explore the physical remains of what is now a hidden trolley network\, including massive stone tunnels and bridge abutments along this loop hike. \nMore about the Trolley Trail: Fairmount Park Conservancy\, along with partners at Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and the Belmont Plateau Trails Alliance\, have been working to develop the Trolley Trail – a scenic multi-purpose trail that loosely follows the path of the former Fairmount Park Trolley. New gateways\, trail signage\, and bike racks were recently added\, and a ribbon-cutting was held in November 2023. Read more here.
