SUMMARY:PARK AFTER DARK: Moonwalk + Stargazing Party
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a two-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation.  \nWe’ll start by using the moonlight to guide us on a short hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail – a wooded trail that runs high above Kelly Drive and offers some views of the Schuylkill River below. Learn a little about the history of the area as well as the nocturnal animals that call the forest home. \nNext\, we’ll turn our attention to the moon itself by ending the hike with a guided moon and planet observation. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss!

SUMMARY:Nature as Lover: Earth Day Hike + Meditation
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and ecotherapist/Lenape language keeper Krista Nelson on a two-mile guided Earth Day hike and meditation on Sunday\, April 21 from 1:00-3:30 PM. \nOn the first Earth Day in 1970\, an estimated 30\,000 people gathered at Belmont Plateau\, making it one of the largest Earth Day gatherings in the country that day. (Read more here.) We’ll honor the historic day that occurred steps from where we’ll meet by showing our appreciation and drawing our attention to the sights and sounds of nature. “Witnessing is the first step in nurturing a relationship. And a deeper relationship with nature is good medicine for everyone\,” Krista teaches in her Nature As Lover program. \nWe will hike on the historic Trolley Trail\, stopping to listen and closely observe the natural surroundings. Our journey will lead us along the Chamounix Creek\, where we will spread out in seated positions at the water’s edge and collectively meditate\, accompanied by the reassuring rhythmic sounds of the flowing water. Then\, we will accompany the sound of the creek with our own spontaneous music. Krista calls this practice of listening to water and reciprocating with sound\, “Creek Drinking.” She says\, “When we take sips of the creek with our ears and respond with music\, we can process feelings of isolation.” This is next-level reciprocity! \nFinally\, we’ll gather at a historic picnic pavilion for a fireside celebration. The light and warmth of the fire will remind us that spring is here and longer days have returned. Warm beverages and snacks will be available.
