SUMMARY:Connecting with Nature: Valentine’s Hike + Meditation
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nRekindle your love of nature in the heart of winter. Join Fairmount Park Conservancy and ecotherapist/Lenape language keeper Krista Nelson on a two-mile guided Valentine’s hike and meditation on Sunday\, February 11 from 10:00 AM-12:30 PM. \nBetter than a box of chocolates\, we’ll make sure Mother Nature is seen and heard. Witnessing the sights and sounds of nature\, especially in winter\, demonstrates our highest level of appreciation. “Witnessing is the first step in nurturing a relationship. And a deeper relationship with nature is good medicine for everyone\,” Krista teaches in her Nature As Lover program. \nWe will hike on the historic Trolley Trail\, stopping to listen and closely observe the natural surroundings. Our journey will lead us along the Chamounix Creek\, where we will spread out in seated positions at the water’s edge and collectively meditate\, accompanied by the reassuring rhythmic sounds of the flowing water. Then\, we will accompany the sound of the creek with our own spontaneous music. Krista calls this practice of listening to water and reciprocating with sound\, “Creek Drinking.” She says\, “When we take sips of the creek with our ears and respond with music\, we can process feelings of isolation.” This is next-level reciprocity! \nFinally\, we’ll gather at a historic picnic pavilion for a fireside celebration. The light and warmth of the fire will remind us that longer days are returning and spring is on the way. Hot chocolate\, s’mores\, and other snacks will be available. \n

SUMMARY:Innovative Black Poetry
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nSince the beginning of time\, black writers have contributed to the creation of poetic forms that are still a part of the literary tradition today. In the 20th and 21st centuries\, black poets continued to invent new ways of writing when the old forms did not suffice. Often\, invention was necessary to give voice both to day-to-day black life and black resistance to racist oppression. In this workshop\, we’ll learn about some of these invented forms\, explore what they mean to us today\, and write our own poetry in response. \nThis workshop will be presented by Teaching Artists from Drexel University’s Writers’ Room. The workshop is intended for adults and seniors.

SUMMARY:Hike + Sound Healing Meditation at Lemon Hill Mansion
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Eunmi Chang from Eunmi’s Sound Healing & Yoga for a one-of-a-kind immersive experience on February 17 from 9:30-11:00 AM at Lemon Hill Mansion. \nWe’ll start out with a guided hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail before coming inside the mansion for a peaceful sound healing meditation. Manage your stress\, improve your well-being\, and literally find your grounding inside the gorgeous historic house. \nWhat is a Sound Bath? Essentially\, a sound bath is a meditation class with ambient sound played by the instructor that aims to guide you into a deeper meditative state. Sound baths use singing bowls and other traditional instruments to play repetitive notes at different frequencies to help bring your focus away from your obsessive thoughts. Think of it as an improvised meditative “concert” in a unique setting. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Eunmi Chang has dedicated herself to the art of sound healing and yoga. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Black Book Makers & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nThis display celebrates the origins of African American literature through books\, newspapers\, and other printed materials in the Free Library’s collection. In spite of slavery\, prohibitions on learning to read\, and countless other barriers\, Black people have been participants in the book trades since our arrival in the Americas. \nSome were writers\, but many more were printers\, typesetters\, mechanics\, bookbinders\, booksellers\, entrepreneurs\, and collectors. Often\, individuals played several of these roles throughout their careers. While the details of many of these Black bookmakers’ lives may be lost to us\, by looking at the books themselves\, we can see traces of their work. \nVisit the exhibit in the 2nd floor hallway at Parkway Central Library any time during our open hours\, January 8th – February 29th\, 2024. \nIf this topic interests you\, don’t miss our upcoming program: Black Bookmakers with Ramon Townsend on Thursday\, February 22nd! \nFor a list of books in the display and some recommendations for further reading\, take a look at our community booklist here.
