SUMMARY:Sunset on the Schuylkill: Guided Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Hidden River Outfitters for a picturesque two-mile guided kayak tour on the Schuylkill River. \nThe tour departs from the Walnut Street dock along the Schuylkill River Trail and heads upriver to the Fairmount Water Works\, where you’ll experience a rarely-seen perspective of these historic structures from the water below. Learn interesting facts about the history of the park while enjoying spectacular views of the city skyline at sunset. \nNo gear or kayaking experience necessary — kayaking equipment and instruction provided. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Jason Mifflin has owned and operated Hidden River Outfitters since June 2010. From homemade rafts to sea kayaks\, Jason loves to be on the water in anything that floats. He spent much of his life paddling a canoe until he discovered kayaking about fourteen years ago. He appreciates both whitewater and flatwater kayaking for their respective exhilarating and relaxing qualities. Jason enjoys sharing his passion for being outdoors with others and reconnecting people with the rivers they often appreciate but never experience. Jason loves to get folks out on the water\, regardless of their experience\, and expose them to paddling. Also\, as a native of Philadelphia\, he enjoys recounting the history and function of many of the areas that we encounter on our tours.

SUMMARY:Tai Chi + Sound Healing Meditation with Eunmi Chang
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nWelcome the start of summer by joining Fairmount Park Conservancy and Eunmi Chang from Eunmi’s Sound Healing & Yoga on Saturday\, September 7 from 9:00-10:15 AM for a one-of-a-kind immersive experience in West Fairmount Park. \nWe’ll start out by learning and moving through a series of tai chi exercises. Tai chi combines slow\, focused movements and deep breathing\, allowing us to tap into a peaceful space before transitioning into a sound healing meditation. During the 45-minute sound healing meditation\, Eunmi will utilize singing bowls and other instruments to guide us into a deep meditative state. Manage your stress\, improve your well-being\, and literally find your grounding outside in the park. \nWhat is a Sound Bath? Essentially\, a sound bath is a meditation class with ambient sound played by the instructor that aims to guide you into a deeper meditative state. Sound baths use singing bowls and other traditional instruments to play repetitive notes at different frequencies to help bring your focus away from your obsessive thoughts. Think of it as an improvised meditative “concert” in a unique setting. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Eunmi Chang has dedicated herself to the art of sound healing and yoga. She is a 250 HR-certified sound mediation practitioner as well as a 500 HR-certified yoga teacher. She specializes particularly in Tibetan singing bowls and crystal bowls as well as combining her sound therapy with yoga asanas/poses\, breath work\, meditation\, chakra and aura cleansing. Her passion is to create sound vibrations that help people feel relaxed and whole. When she plays her healing bowls\, the experience can be both calming and wondrous. To date\, she has led over 170 sound healing meditation and yoga workshops/events and has been featured in Philly Magazine.

SUMMARY:Parkside Past\, Parkside Present: Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a 2.5-mile walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood. \nParkside. The name says it all – it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture. \nTour highlights include:\n-Centennial Exposition model in Please Touch Museum\n-Smith Memorial Arch\n-Parkside Apartments (when built it was one of the tallest apartment buildings in the city)\n-Christ Community Baptist Church (built from an old synagogue)\n-Lansdowne Apartment Building (built in 1897)\n-Centennial Commons\n-Philadelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park and mural

SUMMARY:TRAILS TO ALES: Guided Hike + Drinks
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy for a thirsty Thursday guided hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail on September 12 from 5:00–7:00 PM. \nJohn Sigmund\, Fairmount Park Conservancy’s Director of Partnerships and Sponsorships\, will lead participants on a roughly two-mile hike that will touch on the history of the Lemon Hill area as well as the history of brewing and beer gardens in what is now East Fairmount Park. We’ll start at Lemon Hill Mansion and will end at the Water Works Cider and Beer Garden. The hike back is short — roughly a half-mile in length. \nAbout Cosmic Cafe\, the Cosmic Foundation\, and the Water Works Cider and Beer Garden:The Cosmic Foundation was founded in 2018 by Peg Botto\, owner and chef at Cosmic Catering. She has a background in Human Services as a QIDP (Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional) and has carried that experience with her in the food business. Cosmic hires and trains employees who have developmental disabilities. Most staff start out as dishwashers and then are trained in other areas. A percentage of all profits from Cosmic Cafe and the Water Works Cider and Beer Garden go towards the Cosmic Foundation\, which helps disabled individuals learn valuable life skills that will help them in their everyday tasks. SUMMARY:Footsteps of the First People: Guided Hike + Meditation
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and ecotherapist/Lenape nature healer Krista Nelson for a two-mile guided hike and meditation along the Trolley Trail. This hike will help you rekindle your love of nature and find strength and companionship in a community of fellow nature lovers. \nAs a sixth-generation Lenape grandmother\, Krista honors the Lenape tradition of interconnectedness and reverence for nature. A Lenape language keeper\, Krista is working to revitalize this endangered indigenous language and will teach participants how to say a few Lenape phrases along the hike. \nAs we hike\, we’ll stop to listen and closely observe the natural surroundings. Our journey will lead us to several small tributary creeks\, where Krista will play the Native American flute as we meditate alongside the water’s edge. We will add to the sound of the creek with our own spontaneous humming and whistling – a way to show our love for the water. Krista calls this practice of listening to the water and reciprocating with sound “Creek Drinking” (not literally of course!). We will end with the telling of the Fourth Crow Prophecy\, a story from the Lenape Nation that has been passed down through generations. \nThis event will connect you to nature and allow you to tune your breath to the creek’s flow so you can let troublesome thoughts wash away downstream. It will also help you develop a deeper appreciation for the Lenape – the first inhabitants and stewards of these lands.
