SUMMARY:Relics and Ruins: West Park
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy’s John Sigmund\, Director of Partnerships and Sponsorships and park history enthusiast\, for a three-mile guided hike to explore the relics and ruins of Fairmount Park. \nAs one of America’s oldest urban parks\, Fairmount Park has accumulated many layers of history — sometimes literally! A closer exploration of the landscape reveals the ruins of abandoned infrastructure and buildings that go back to the beginnings of the 178-year-old park system and occasionally\, even further. Most of the year\, nature cloaks these hidden treasures in dense growth\, but the bare woods of the winter provide the perfect time to go off the beaten path. \nIf you’re fascinated by Philly history and discovering hidden treasures of park past\, this hike is not to be missed! \nThis is the event page for the March 29 West Park hike; however\, there will also be an East Park hike on March 15 (more info here). Sign up for one date or for both! \nPlease note\, this hike will have some challenging sections that require agility. Since we will occasionally venture off trail\, you are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking boots and rugged outerwear that can withstand scrapes from sharp sticks and branches (please\, no fashion or formal wear! :)).

SUMMARY:Park after Dark: Moonwalk + Stargazing Party
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a one-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation.  \nWe’ll start by using the moonlight to guide us on a short hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail – a wooded trail that runs high above Kelly Drive and offers views of the Schuylkill River below. Learn a little about the history of the area as well as the nocturnal animals that call the forest home. \nNext\, we’ll turn our attention to the sky with a guided moon and planet/star observation\, depending on the month. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets or stars and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss!

SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge: Guided Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Troy Bynum of TB Wildlife Photography LLC on Sunday\, April 27 from 1 1 AM–1:30 PM for an introduction to the City Nature Challenge and the iNaturalist app followed by a guided bird hike in West Fairmount Park. \nThe City Nature Challenge (CNC) is an annual event where cities around the world compete to see who can record the most wildlife observations (plants and animals) on the iNaturalist app. While there is a friendly competition component of the CNC (click here to see how Philadelphia ranked last year)\, the observations made are also really important in helping scientists to track changes in wildlife populations over time. \nWe’ll start inside with a brief intro on how to use the iNaturalist app. Troy\, a skilled wildlife photographer and owner of TB Wildlife Photography LLC\, will also go over some helpful tips and tricks for using your phone’s camera outside. From there\, we’ll head out on a hike where Troy will guide us as we look and listen for birds in both open fields and more forested areas. As we hike\, participants are encouraged (but definitely not required) to use the iNaturalist app to take pictures of plants and animals to add to Philadelphia’s City Nature Challenge totals. \nAfter the hike\, we’ll return to Ohio House where staff will be available to assist with uploading any observations to iNaturalist. We’ll also have a monitor setup so we can see in real time all of the observations made throughout the park and city.

SUMMARY:Eraserhood Fest
DESCRIPTION:On May 2nd\, 2025 5pm-11pm\, the inaugural Eraserhood Fest will kick off during Philly’s First Friday\, bringing together locals and visitors for an immersive celebration of the history\, culture\, and community of one of Philadelphia’s most iconic neighborhoods — Eraserhood (also known as Callowhill-Chinatown North or the Loft District). \nFrom its industrial roots to its modern-day transformation\, Eraserhood remains one of Philadelphia’s hidden gems. Once home to bustling factories and workshops\, the area was immortalized by filmmaker David Lynch\, whose iconic 1977 experimental film Eraserhead was directly inspired by his harrowing and exhilarating experience living in the neighborhood. Today\, it’s a vibrant\, multifaceted community filled with residential spaces\, restaurants\, cafes\, beer gardens\, nightlife\, parks\, and public art that tell the stories of the people who have shaped the neighborhood over the years.\nEraserhood Fest will bring the area’s rich history and unique character to life through a dynamic mix of local music\, cultural activities\, food\, art\, and interactive experiences. With David Lynch’s legacy at the heart of the festival\, the event will honor the neighborhood’s past while celebrating its present and future. \n  \nNearby Indego Stations: 12th & Callowhill\, 11th & Wood
