SUMMARY:Week Without Driving PHL
DESCRIPTION:The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and Transit Forward Philadelphia are proud to co-host this year’s Week Without Driving PHL\, taking place September 29 – October 5\, 2025. \nWhat is it?\nWeek Without Driving encourages people to commit to not driving for the week and see what it’s like to navigate our streets without a car. \nFor as many as one third of Americans\, this isn’t a challenge—it’s everyday life. People with disabilities\, young people\, seniors\, and those who can’t afford a car or gas already rely on walking\, rolling\, biking\, public transit\, or catching rides with others to get where they need to go. The Week Without Driving is a great way to better understand and advocate for the transit that Philly deserves. By stepping into the shoes of nondrivers\, even just for a week\, participants can learn firsthand about the barriers and challenges people face\, and work together to make our city and region more accessible for everyone.

SUMMARY:Mid-Autumn Festival
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 30th year\, the Mid-Autumn Festival attracts thousands of individuals and families to Philadelphia’s Chinatown to reconnect and give thanks under the Harvest Moon. This public street festival combines the work of hundreds: youth volunteers running activities\, restaurants donating food\, artists performing\, and businesses\, small and large\, supporting the cause. \nThe Festival is a family-friendly event centered on Asian communities. Activities include lion dances\, martial arts displays\, Chinese opera\, carnival games\, arts & crafts\, and the mooncake eating contest. \nChinatown was designated in 2023 as one of the Most Endangered Historic Places. The displacement and disruption that threaten historic neighborhoods across the U.S. are threatening our very own Chinatown’s existence. But\, united in collective action\, we can protect our cultural heritage and invest in future generations.

SUMMARY:Parkside and Centennial District Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a two-mile walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood. \nParkside. The name says it all – it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture. \nTour highlights include:\n-Please Touch Museum/Memorial Hall\n-Smith Memorial Arch\n-Parkside Apartments (when built it was one of the tallest apartment buildings in the city)\n-Christ Community Baptist Church (built from an old synagogue)\n-Lansdowne Apartment Building (built in 1897)\n-Centennial Commons\n-Philadelphia Stars Negro League Memorial Park and mural \n*Special inside behind-the-scenes tours (roughly 15-20 minutes)* \n\nSeptember 13 only: Please Touch Museum – to view the Centennial Fairgrounds Model\nOctober 19 only: Shofuso Japanese House and Gardens
