SUMMARY:PARK AFTER DARK: Moonwalk + Stargazing Party
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a two-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation.  \nWe’ll start by using the moonlight to guide us on a short hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail – a wooded trail that runs high above Kelly Drive and offers some views of the Schuylkill River below. Learn a little about the history of the area as well as the nocturnal animals that call the forest home. \nNext\, we’ll turn our attention to the moon itself by ending the hike with a guided moon and planet or star observation\, depending on the month. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets or stars and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nEstimated distance: roughly two miles\nLevel:easy to moderate\nTerrain: combination of flat open parkland and hilly trails \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Buddy Muhler is a passionate astronomer and science educator. He has over 15 years of experience operating telescopes and educating the public on astronomy\, first at The Franklin Institute and now in his current position with The Academy of Natural Sciences.

SUMMARY:Tree Tour along the Trolley Trail
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Andrew Kirkpatrick\, Urban Greening Coordinator with Parks and Rec’s Farm Philly Program\, for a two-mile tree identification hike along the historic Trolley Trail. \nFrom sweetgums to tulip poplars to a variety of oaks— our urban forests are teeming with many tree species. On this hike\, we’ll learn to identify commonly found trees based on leaves\, branches\, and bark. We’ll take time to observe the body language of trees\, why they grow the way they do\, and what we can learn about the life of the forest. And we’ll pepper our conversation with tree facts related to history\, culture\, economy\, and uses. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO:Andrew has been leading tree walks for the past ten years during his various roles\, including at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and Willistown Conservation Trust. Andrew joined the Farm Philly team in December as Urban Greening Coordinator. His past work experience and education in conservation\, ecological restoration\, and social impact strategy combined with his passion for community and urban agriculture made the position a natural fit. He brings this experience to Farm Philly where he is managing the Community Compost Network and Land Access Program. Andrew enjoys the opportunity to engage local community gardeners and urban farmers as they gain access to resources needed to support their work. \nOriginally from Harrisburg\, Andrew moved to Philly in 2010 for graduate school in Landscape Architecture/Ecological Restoration at Temple University and never left. Andrew loves trees and talking about their connection to the land and the past. He lives in Germantown with his family and their numerous pets. He loves riding his bike in the Wissahickon and along the Schuylkill River\, listening to WXPN\, and gardening with native plants.

SUMMARY:Parkside Past\, Parkside Present: Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a 2.5-mile walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood. \nParkside. The name says it all – it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture.

It will feature immersive experiences led by historic storyteller and “Conductor” Dee Patterson of UGR3DAY Underground Railroad Experiences Inc. and Gilletta “Gigi” McGraw\, portraying free Black woman Cornelia Wells. \nWe will return to the sheep barn at the end of the hike and from 1:00–2:00 PM\, there will be a panel discussion and community conversation that participants are invited to stay for (optional).
