SUMMARY:Innovative Black Poetry
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nSince the beginning of time\, black writers have contributed to the creation of poetic forms that are still a part of the literary tradition today. In the 20th and 21st centuries\, black poets continued to invent new ways of writing when the old forms did not suffice. Often\, invention was necessary to give voice both to day-to-day black life and black resistance to racist oppression. In this workshop\, we’ll learn about some of these invented forms\, explore what they mean to us today\, and write our own poetry in response. \nThis workshop will be presented by Teaching Artists from Drexel University’s Writers’ Room. The workshop is intended for adults and seniors.

SUMMARY:Hike + Sound Healing Meditation at Lemon Hill Mansion
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Eunmi Chang from Eunmi’s Sound Healing & Yoga for a one-of-a-kind immersive experience on February 17 from 9:30-11:00 AM at Lemon Hill Mansion. \nWe’ll start out with a guided hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail before coming inside the mansion for a peaceful sound healing meditation. Manage your stress\, improve your well-being\, and literally find your grounding inside the gorgeous historic house. \nWhat is a Sound Bath? Essentially\, a sound bath is a meditation class with ambient sound played by the instructor that aims to guide you into a deeper meditative state. Sound baths use singing bowls and other traditional instruments to play repetitive notes at different frequencies to help bring your focus away from your obsessive thoughts. Think of it as an improvised meditative “concert” in a unique setting. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Eunmi Chang has dedicated herself to the art of sound healing and yoga. She is a 250 HR-certified sound mediation practitioner as well as a 500 HR-certified yoga teacher. She specializes particularly in Tibetan Singing bowls and Crystal Bowls as well as combining her sound therapy with yoga asanas/poses\, breath work\, meditation\, chakra and aura cleansing. Her passion is to create sound vibrations that help people feel relaxed and whole. When she plays her healing bowls\, the experience can be both calming and wondrous. To date\, she has led over 150 sound healing meditation and yoga workshops/events and has been featured in Philly Magazine.

DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nThis display celebrates the origins of African American literature through books\, newspapers\, and other printed materials in the Free Library’s collection. In spite of slavery\, prohibitions on learning to read\, and countless other barriers\, Black people have been participants in the book trades since our arrival in the Americas. \nSome were writers\, but many more were printers\, typesetters\, mechanics\, bookbinders\, booksellers\, entrepreneurs\, and collectors. Often\, individuals played several of these roles throughout their careers. Through a selection of original Artworks\, photographs\, and archival documents from the Art Department’s artist research files\, learn about the Dupree Studio of Mantua’s story and how through art and activism\, Dupree was able to win back his Deed. This exhibition not only celebrates Dupree’s artistic legacy but also highlights the transformative power of art in the face of adversity\, inviting visitors to witness the triumph of creativity over injustice. DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and ecotherapist/Lenape nature healer Krista Nelson for a two-mile guided hike and meditation along the Trolley Trail on Saturday\, March 16 from 9:00-11:30 AM. This hike will help you rekindle your love of nature and find strength and companionship in a community of fellow nature lovers. \nAs a sixth-generation Lenape grandmother\, Krista honors the Lenape tradition of interconnectedness and reverence for nature. A Lenape language keeper\, Krista is working to revitalize this endangered indigenous language and unlock embedded codes to Lenape culture for a people and a planet in dire need of decolonizing hearts and minds. \nAs we hike\, we’ll stop to listen and closely observe the natural surroundings. Our journey will lead us to several small tributary creeks\, where we will meditate alongside the rhythmic sounds of the flowing water. We will add to the sound of the creek with our own spontaneous humming and whistling – a way to show our love for the water. Krista calls this practice of listening to the water and reciprocating with sound “Creek Drinking” (not literally of course!). Finally\, Krista will lead us in a nature element ritual as we celebrate the spring equinox – a time of importance to the Lenape as it welcomes spring and new beginnings. \nThis event will connect you to nature and allow you to tune your breath to the creek’s flow so you can let troublesome thoughts wash away downstream. It will also help you develop a deeper appreciation for the Lenape – the first inhabitants and stewards of these lands.

The Fairmount Park Trolley operated in East and West Park from 1896-1946\, providing a reliable and enjoyable means of accessing park amenities. Explore the physical remains of what is now a hidden trolley network including massive stone tunnels and bridge abutments along this 4-mile loop hike. \nMore about the Trolley Trail:Fairmount Park Conservancy–along with partners at Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and the Belmont Plateau Trails Alliance–have been working to develop the Trolley Trail\, a scenic multi-purpose trail that loosely follows the path of the former Fairmount Park Trolley. DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a two-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation.  \nWe’ll start by using the moonlight to guide us on a short hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail – a wooded trail that runs high above Kelly Drive and offers some views of the Schuylkill River below. Learn a little about the history of the area as well as the nocturnal animals that call the forest home. \nNext\, we’ll turn our attention to the moon itself by ending the hike with a guided moon and planet observation. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss!

DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy’s John Sigmund\, Director of Partnerships and Sponsorships and park history enthusiast\, for a three-mile guided hike to explore the relics and ruins of Fairmount Park. \nAs one of America’s oldest urban parks\, Fairmount Park has accumulated many layers of history — sometimes literally! A closer exploration of the landscape reveals the ruins of abandoned infrastructure and buildings that go back to the beginnings of the 178-year-old park system and occasionally\, even further. Most of the year\, nature cloaks these hidden treasures in dense growth\, but the bare woods of the winter provide the perfect time to go off the beaten path. \nWe’ll start at Belmont Plateau and touch upon a section of the Trolley Trail. Next\, we’ll find the hidden remnants of the rail tracks of the Philadelphia Columbia Railroad. Finally\, we’ll explore the ruins of the George’s Hill Reservoir\, taking in one of the most secret and spectacular city views. \nIf you’re fascinated by Philly history and discovering hidden treasures of park past\, this hike is not to be missed! \nPlease note\, this hike will have some challenging sections that require agility. Since we will occasionally venture off trail\, you are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking boots and rugged outerwear that can withstand scrapes from sharp sticks and branches (please\, no fashion or formal wear! :)).
