SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge: Guided Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Troy Bynum of TB Wildlife Photography LLC on Sunday\, April 27 from 1 1 AM–1:30 PM for an introduction to the City Nature Challenge and the iNaturalist app followed by a guided bird hike in West Fairmount Park. \nThe City Nature Challenge (CNC) is an annual event where cities around the world compete to see who can record the most wildlife observations (plants and animals) on the iNaturalist app. While there is a friendly competition component of the CNC (click here to see how Philadelphia ranked last year)\, the observations made are also really important in helping scientists to track changes in wildlife populations over time. \nWe’ll start inside with a brief intro on how to use the iNaturalist app. Troy\, a skilled wildlife photographer and owner of TB Wildlife Photography LLC\, will also go over some helpful tips and tricks for using your phone’s camera outside. From there\, we’ll head out on a hike where Troy will guide us as we look and listen for birds in both open fields and more forested areas. As we hike\, participants are encouraged (but definitely not required) to use the iNaturalist app to take pictures of plants and animals to add to Philadelphia’s City Nature Challenge totals. \nAfter the hike\, we’ll return to Ohio House where staff will be available to assist with uploading any observations to iNaturalist. We’ll also have a monitor setup so we can see in real time all of the observations made throughout the park and city.

SUMMARY:Eraserhood Fest
DESCRIPTION:On May 2nd\, 2025 5pm-11pm\, the inaugural Eraserhood Fest will kick off during Philly’s First Friday\, bringing together locals and visitors for an immersive celebration of the history\, culture\, and community of one of Philadelphia’s most iconic neighborhoods — Eraserhood (also known as Callowhill-Chinatown North or the Loft District). \nFrom its industrial roots to its modern-day transformation\, Eraserhood remains one of Philadelphia’s hidden gems. Once home to bustling factories and workshops\, the area was immortalized by filmmaker David Lynch\, whose iconic 1977 experimental film Eraserhead was directly inspired by his harrowing and exhilarating experience living in the neighborhood. Today\, it’s a vibrant\, multifaceted community filled with residential spaces\, restaurants\, cafes\, beer gardens\, nightlife\, parks\, and public art that tell the stories of the people who have shaped the neighborhood over the years.\nEraserhood Fest will bring the area’s rich history and unique character to life through a dynamic mix of local music\, cultural activities\, food\, art\, and interactive experiences. With David Lynch’s legacy at the heart of the festival\, the event will honor the neighborhood’s past while celebrating its present and future. \n  \nNearby Indego Stations: 12th & Callowhill\, 11th & Wood

SUMMARY:SEPTA Budget Public Hearings
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nSEPTA announced major service cuts and fare increases beginning August 2025.  \nWhat does this mean for riders?  \nCatastrophic cuts to transit service included in SEPTA’s proposed budget for the next year\, impacting the whole Philadelphia metro area. \nIn the last decade\, the funding formula for public transportation has remained stagnant\, even as costs for transit agencies have continued to rise. Now we are fully at a crisis point: SEPTA has announced fixed route service cuts up to 45% and fare increases of 21.5%. \nThis would effectively kill public transit in our region\, and the ensuing damage to our riders\, our economy\, our healthcare system\, our road congestion\, and air quality is incalculable. \nOn April 10th\, SEPTA announced the cuts they would have to make in order to operate under the proposed budget\, and they will impact every rider no matter if you’re traveling from Overbrook or South Philly. If enacted\, the cuts would increase fares to New York City prices with a shadow of the service that Philadelphia used to receive. And the impacts on disabled riders would be even more profound\, with 40\,000 paratransit trips per year no longer served by SEPTA ACCESS\, and fares increased by 35%. Read more about the proposed budget here. \nSEPTA needs to hear from you! Public comments are being accepted NOW through May 28. Click here for details. SUMMARY:Ride of Silence 2025
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nAn invitation to all cyclists for the 21st Philadelphia Ride of Silence. For the past 20 years\, cyclists throughout Greater Philadelphia have come together to ride silently in honor of riders killed or injured by motorists. Although bicyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists\, the public often isn’t aware of these rights\, and sometimes not aware of cyclists themselves. The goal of this annual\, international event is to not have another ride\, but to have a year with zero bicyclist deaths.\nRSVP for ride
