SUMMARY:PARK(ing) DAY PHL
DESCRIPTION:The number of parks throughout Philadelphia increases dramatically each year on the third Friday in September\, when activists\, artists\, architects\, and other citizens transform metered parking spaces into temporary public parks.  Known as PARKing) Day\, this annual event re-imagines the possibilities of 140 square feet of public space.  The event celebrates parks and other public spaces in cities across the country\, and raises awareness of the need for more pedestrian-friendly spaces in our urban areas. \nPARK(ing) Day was founded by Rebar\, a San Francisco art and design studio\, in 2005 to raise awareness of the need for green spaces in urban environments. Philadelphia celebrated PARK(ing) Day for the first time in 2008 with over 25 installations for relaxing\, cycling\, creating art\, education\, and socializing.

SUMMARY:Tai Chi + Sound Healing Meditation with Eunmi Chang
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nWelcome the start of summer by joining Fairmount Park Conservancy and Eunmi Chang from Eunmi’s Sound Healing & Yoga for a one-of-a-kind immersive experience in West Fairmount Park. \nWe’ll start out by learning and moving through a series of tai chi exercises. Tai chi combines slow\, focused movements and deep breathing\, allowing us to tap into a peaceful space before transitioning into a sound healing meditation. During the 45-minute sound healing meditation\, Eunmi will utilize singing bowls and other instruments to guide us into a deep meditative state. Manage your stress\, improve your well-being\, and literally find your grounding outside in the park. \nWhat is a Sound Bath? Essentially\, a sound bath is a meditation class with ambient sound played by the instructor that aims to guide you into a deeper meditative state. Sound baths use singing bowls and other traditional instruments to play repetitive notes at different frequencies to help bring your focus away from your obsessive thoughts. Think of it as an improvised meditative “concert” in a unique setting. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Eunmi Chang has dedicated herself to the art of sound healing and yoga. She is a 250 HR-certified sound mediation practitioner as well as a 500 HR-certified yoga teacher. She specializes particularly in Tibetan singing bowls and crystal bowls as well as combining her sound therapy with yoga asanas/poses\, breath work\, meditation\, chakra and aura cleansing. Her passion is to create sound vibrations that help people feel relaxed and whole. When she plays her healing bowls\, the experience can be both calming and wondrous. To date\, she has led over 170 sound healing meditation and yoga workshops/events and has been featured in Philly Magazine.

SUMMARY:Parkside Past\, Parkside Present: Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Michael Burch (science educator\, community organizer\, and founder of the Parkside Journal) for a 2.5-mile walking tour of the Parkside neighborhood. \nParkside. The name says it all – it’s the neighborhood beside West Fairmount Park. Similarly to Strawberry Mansion on the other side of the Schuylkill\, Parkside is where the city grid meets the greenspace\, buffered by a boulevard of grand homes facing the park. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Originally populated by German-Americans and Jewish immigrants of Russian descent\, after World War II\, the Great Migration coupled with ‘white flight’ transformed Parkside into a predominantly African-American neighborhood\, which it remains to this day. In 1983\, community organizers had the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural legacy and many fine examples of Victorian architecture.

SUMMARY:Tree Tour along the Trolley Trail
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Andrew Kirkpatrick\, Urban Greening Coordinator with Parks and Rec’s Farm Philly Program\, for a two-mile tree identification hike along the historic Trolley Trail. \nFrom sweetgums to tulip poplars to a variety of oaks— our urban forests are teeming with many tree species. On this hike\, we’ll learn to identify commonly found trees based on leaves\, branches\, and bark. We’ll take time to observe the body language of trees\, why they grow the way they do\, and what we can learn about the life of the forest. And we’ll pepper our conversation with tree facts related to history\, culture\, economy\, and uses. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO:Andrew has been leading tree walks for the past ten years during his various roles\, including at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and Willistown Conservation Trust. Andrew joined the Farm Philly team in December as Urban Greening Coordinator. His past work experience and education in conservation\, ecological restoration\, and social impact strategy combined with his passion for community and urban agriculture made the position a natural fit. He brings this experience to Farm Philly where he is managing the Community Compost Network and Land Access Program. Andrew enjoys the opportunity to engage local community gardeners and urban farmers as they gain access to resources needed to support their work. \nOriginally from Harrisburg\, Andrew moved to Philly in 2010 for graduate school in Landscape Architecture/Ecological Restoration at Temple University and never left. Andrew loves trees and talking about their connection to the land and the past. He lives in Germantown with his family and their numerous pets. He loves riding his bike in the Wissahickon and along the Schuylkill River\, listening to WXPN\, and gardening with native plants.
