SUMMARY:Community Paddle Boating at FDR Park
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Independence Seaport Museum for free paddle boating at FDR Park on select dates in the summer and fall! \nPaddle boats are an easy and safe way for families and people of all ages to explore Edgewood Lake\, just behind the FDR Park Boathouse. As you pedal around\, use the kid-friendly binoculars provided to spot turtles\, ducks\, blooming flowers\, and maybe even a great blue heron – the long-legged shore bird the boats are shaped after. \nThis event is geared toward our FDR Park neighbors. \nChildren must be able to fit into a life jacket (30+ pounds) in order to participate. Waivers must be signed beforehand\, and all minors must have an adult available to sign for them. There is no place to store belongings while out on the water\, so we recommend bringing a small bag/waterproof case to store them in. We suggest having at least two people on each boat to balance pedaling; boats cannot hold more than four people.

SUMMARY:Trails to Ales: Guided Hike + Drinks
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin John Sigmund\, Fairmount Park Conservancy’s Director of Sponsorships and Partnerships\, for a hiking tour to explore the history of brewing and beer gardens around East Fairmount Park. Naturally\, we’ll end the hike at a modern-day park beer garden – the Waterworks Cider House and Beer Garden! \nAs the name of the Brewerytown neighborhood that borders East Park indicates\, Philadelphia was a beer-brewing town. In fact\, in the late 19th century\, with over 30 breweries\, we were the brewing capital of America! Before the city created the park\, the banks of the Schuylkill River were valuable to emerging breweries for the harvesting and storage of ice and for the cold storage of lager beer in underground vaults. Also\, after acquiring several historic houses with the establishment of Fairmount Park\, the city sought ways to re-adapt them and the properties were leased as beer gardens enjoyed by a growing German population. The hike will discuss this and many other intoxicating aspects of beer history in Fairmount Park.

SUMMARY:Park after Dark: Moonwalk + Stargazing
DESCRIPTION:Join Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a one-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation.  \nWe’ll start by using the moonlight to guide us on a short hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail – a wooded trail that runs high above Kelly Drive and offers views of the Schuylkill River below. Learn a little about the history of the area as well as the nocturnal animals that call the forest home. \n*June\, July\, and September Special!* In June\, July\, and September\, we will be joined by the Academy of Natural Sciences. A naturalist from the museum’s education team will lead the hike portion of the event\, sharing their expertise on the flora\, fauna\, and geology of the area. \nNext\, we’ll turn our attention to the sky with a guided moon and planet/star observation\, depending on the month. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets or stars and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nINSTRUCTOR BIO:Buddy Muhler is a passionate astronomer and science educator. He has over 15 years of experience operating telescopes and educating the public on astronomy\, first at The Franklin Institute and now in his current position with The Academy of Natural Sciences.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Guided Hike Series: Summer Hike + Meditation
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and ecotherapist Krista Nelson for a two-mile guided hike followed by a meditation to help you rekindle your love of nature in the midst of summer. Find strength and companionship in a community of fellow nature lovers. Krista’s popular program ‘Nature as Lover’ facilitates healing through five natural elements: fire\, water\, air\, earth\, and space. \nWe will hike for about two miles on the Boxers’ Trail\, stopping to listen and closely observe the natural surroundings. Our journey will lead us to several creeks\, where we will spread out in seated positions at the water’s edge\, and collectively meditate\, accompanied by the reassuring rhythmic sounds of the flowing water. We will join in with the sound of the creek with our own spontaneous humming and whistling and in this way\, show our love for the water. Krista calls this practice of listening to water and reciprocating with sound\, “Creek Drinking” (not literally of course!). \nThis event will connect you to nature and develop your meditative practice. It will help you find your breath in tune with the creek’s flow so you can let troublesome thoughts wash away downstream. \nThis hike is part of our Second Saturday Guided Hike Series. These hikes occur from 10 AM–12 PM on the second Saturday of every month (May–November). Please see below for the full schedule. \n\n 2025 SECOND SATURDAY GUIDED HIKE SERIES SCHEDULE\nPlease continue to check back as fall topics will be added soon. \nMay 10: Hiking 101 with the Appalachian Mountain Club \nJune 14: Birdwatching Walk with Troy Bynum \nJuly 12: Tree Tour with Andrew Kirkpatrick \nAugust 9: Guided Hike + Meditation with Krista Nelson \nSeptember 13: Birdwatching Walk with Troy Bynum \nOctober 11: Tree Tour with Andrew Kirkpatrick

SUMMARY:Sunset on the Schuylkill: Guided Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Hidden River Outfitters for a picturesque two-mile guided kayak tour on the Schuylkill River. \nThe tour departs from the Walnut Street dock along the Schuylkill River Trail and heads upriver to the Fairmount Water Works\, where you’ll experience a rarely-seen perspective of these historic structures from the water below. Learn interesting facts about the history of the park while enjoying spectacular views of the city skyline at sunset. \nNo gear or kayaking experience necessary — kayaking equipment and instruction provided. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Jason Mifflin has owned and operated Hidden River Outfitters since June 2010. From homemade rafts to sea kayaks\, Jason loves to be on the water in anything that floats. He spent much of his life paddling a canoe until he discovered kayaking about fourteen years ago. He appreciates both whitewater and flatwater kayaking for their respective exhilarating and relaxing qualities. Jason enjoys sharing his passion for being outdoors with others and reconnecting people with the rivers they often appreciate but never experience. Jason loves to get folks out on the water\, regardless of their experience\, and expose them to paddling. Also\, as a native of Philadelphia\, he enjoys recounting the history and function of many of the areas that we encounter on our tours.

\nPLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a loop hike! It’s a one-way hike beginning at Mount Pleasant Mansion and ending at the Waterworks Cider House and Beer Garden. We strongly suggest using Uber/Lyft\, public transit\, or Indego bike share to arrive at the starting point so you do not have to return for your vehicle/bike. \n\nStarting Location: Mount Pleasant Mansion (3800 Mt Pleasant Drive\, Philadelphia PA 19121)\nEnding location: Waterworks Cider and Beer Garden (640 Waterworks Drive\, Philadelphia PA 19130)\n\n\nINSTRUCTOR BIO: John Sigmund is a multidisciplinary artist\, history lover\, and urban park enthusiast with years of experience as a nonprofit manager and arts educator. Born and raised in Philadelphia\, he spent a decade living in Austin\, San Antonio\, and New York City\, but made a happy homecoming to go back to school at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. John has the proud distinction of actually living in Fairmount Park– he and his partner\, Jaime\, are resident caretakers at Lemon Hill Mansion. And although Lemon Hill is his home base\, John is an enthusiastic advocate for all of the historic houses in the park system. \nABOUT COSMIC CAFE\, THE COSMIC FOUNDATION\, AND THE WATERWORKS CIDER AND BEER GARDEN: The Cosmic Foundation was founded in 2018 by Peg Botto\, owner and chef at Cosmic Catering. She has a background in Human Services as a QIDP (Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional) and has carried that experience with her in the food business. Cosmic hires and trains employees who have developmental disabilities. Most staff start out as dishwashers and then are trained in other areas. A percentage of all profits from Cosmic Cafe and the Waterworks Cider and Beer Garden go towards the Cosmic Foundation\, which helps disabled individuals learn valuable life skills that will help them in their everyday tasks.
