SUMMARY:Trolley Trail Hike
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy for a guided 4-mile hike to learn about the Trolley Trail’s fascinating past and present. The Fairmount Park Trolley operated in East and West Park from 1896-1946\, providing a reliable and enjoyable means of accessing park amenities. Explore the physical remains of what is now a hidden trolley network including massive stone tunnels and bridge abutments along this loop hike. \nMore about the Trolley Trail: Fairmount Park Conservancy\, along with partners at Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and the Belmont Plateau Trails Alliance\, have been working to develop the Trolley Trail – a scenic multi-purpose trail that loosely follows the path of the former Fairmount Park Trolley. New gateways\, trail signage\, and bike racks were recently added and a ribbon cutting was held in November 2023. Read more here.

SUMMARY:Guided Bike Tour of East Fairmount Park
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and experienced bike tour guide Graham Robb on an eight-mile\, all-levels bike ride of East Fairmount Park on Sunday\, May 18 from 9:30 AM-12:30 PM. \nThe guided bike ride will highlight the history\, hidden gems\, and stories of interesting places in East Fairmount Park. Stops include the birthplace of the park at Lemon Hill Mansion\, Sedgeley Porter’s House — a little-known or seen house that is the first Gothic Revival building in the US\, Hatfield House\, John Coltrane’s House\, the Discovery Center\, Smith Playhouse\, as well as many of the park’s beautiful colonial-era mansions. Graham is a great storyteller who will share many perspectives on our park’s past\, present\, and future. \nINSTRUCTOR BIO:Graham Robb is a “retired” lawyer who enjoys biking\, hiking\, gardening and learning anything new.  When he is not officiating high school sports he volunteers much of his time with various organizations including Habitat for Humanity for whom he leads teams of volunteers on builds around the world.  A lifelong resident of Philadelphia\, Graham is something of a history and genealogy buff – having traced his Philadelphia ancestors back to the 1680s – and loves sharing past and current stories about his favorite city. \nTICKET PRICE: FREE** in honor of Love Your Park Week. Donations appreciated. \n**We are proud to be able to offer these events for free. However\, there is limited capacity for all of our bike tours. Last-minute cancellations and no-shows can take away tickets from others. We ask that you be mindful of this and please only register if you plan to attend. \n\nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO: \n\nThe bike ride is roughly eight miles (moderate exertion). Most of the ride is flat; however\, there will be some hilly sections.\nThis event is BYOB….as in\, bring your own bike (and helmet!). No bike? No problem! We’re meeting right next to Wheel Fun Bike Rentals (open\, weather-permitting).\nEveryone must wear a helmet at all times. Riders who arrive without a helmet will not be permitted to join the tour.\nAppropriate for adults and families with children ages 14 and up. Minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult.\nPlease dress according to weather conditions.\nPlease bring your own water and snack (drinking water is not available in the park).\nThere are bathrooms available at the start/end of the tour but not in the middle so please plan accordingly.\nThe bike ride visits the places listed above but does not go inside.\nImportant pre-event information and any event updates are sent out via email. Please make sure the email address entered is correct and that you check it before coming out to the event.\nSpace is limited for this tour and registration is required. If you cannot attend an event\, please show courtesy to fellow parkgoers and try to cancel your registration with advance notice so that someone else can participate. Repeat no-shows may not be able to register for future free hikes.\n\nPARKING/GETTING THERE: There is plenty of free parking in the Lloyd Hall lot at Waterworks Drive. Additional limited parking can be found in the Lemon Hill area / Sedgley Drive\, and in the small lot at the far end of Boathouse Row. As always\, do not leave valuables in your car. If traveling by public transit\, the nearest station is at Art Museum Drive–a quarter-mile walk from the start. The nearest Indego bike station is at the art museum – also a quarter-mile bike from the start.

SUMMARY:SEPTA Budget Public Hearings
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nSEPTA announced major service cuts and fare increases beginning August 2025.  \nWhat does this mean for riders?  \nCatastrophic cuts to transit service included in SEPTA’s proposed budget for the next year\, impacting the whole Philadelphia metro area. \nIn the last decade\, the funding formula for public transportation has remained stagnant\, even as costs for transit agencies have continued to rise. Now we are fully at a crisis point: SEPTA has announced fixed route service cuts up to 45% and fare increases of 21.5%. \nThis would effectively kill public transit in our region\, and the ensuing damage to our riders\, our economy\, our healthcare system\, our road congestion\, and air quality is incalculable. \nOn April 10th\, SEPTA announced the cuts they would have to make in order to operate under the proposed budget\, and they will impact every rider no matter if you’re traveling from Overbrook or South Philly. If enacted\, the cuts would increase fares to New York City prices with a shadow of the service that Philadelphia used to receive. And the impacts on disabled riders would be even more profound\, with 40\,000 paratransit trips per year no longer served by SEPTA ACCESS\, and fares increased by 35%. Read more about the proposed budget here. \nSEPTA needs to hear from you! Public comments are being accepted NOW through May 28. Click here for details. Show up in person in May at the times below! \nOPERATIONS BUDGET PUBLIC HEARINGS AT 1234 MARKET ST \nMonday\, May 19\, 11am. Details & registration \nMonday\, May 19\, 5pm. Details & registration \nTuesday\, May 20\, 10am. Details & registration \nTuesday\, May 20\, 4pm. Details & registration \nWednesday\, May 21\, 10am. Details & registration \nWednesday\, May 21\, 4pm. Details & registration

SUMMARY:Ride of Silence 2025
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nAn invitation to all cyclists for the 21st Philadelphia Ride of Silence. For the past 20 years\, cyclists throughout Greater Philadelphia have come together to ride silently in honor of riders killed or injured by motorists. Although bicyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists\, the public often isn’t aware of these rights\, and sometimes not aware of cyclists themselves. The goal of this annual\, international event is to not have another ride\, but to have a year with zero bicyclist deaths.\nRSVP for ride

SUMMARY:Park after Dark: Moonwalk + Stargazing
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and astronomer/educator Buddy Muhler for a one-mile guided moonwalk and telescope observation.  \nWe’ll start by using the moonlight to guide us on a short hike along the Lemon Hill Rim Trail – a wooded trail that runs high above Kelly Drive and offers views of the Schuylkill River below. Learn a little about the history of the area as well as the nocturnal animals that call the forest home. \n*June\, July\, and September Special!* In June\, July\, and September\, we will be joined by the Academy of Natural Sciences. A naturalist from the museum’s education team will lead the hike portion of the event\, sharing their expertise on the flora\, fauna\, and geology of the area. \nNext\, we’ll turn our attention to the sky with a guided moon and planet/star observation\, depending on the month. Novice and experienced astronomers alike will be given insights and tips by experienced instructor Buddy Muhler. Each attendee will have the chance to travel close up to the moon’s surface by looking through Buddy’s high-powered telescope! Buddy will discuss the lunar cycles and point out interesting visible surface features such as dark gray mares (seas) and white reflective highlands. We’ll gaze at planets or stars and discuss other astronomical wonders of the night sky. \nIf you’re a lunar lunatic\, this is an evening not to miss! \nINSTRUCTOR BIO: Buddy Muhler is a passionate astronomer and science educator. He has over 15 years of experience operating telescopes and educating the public on astronomy\, first at The Franklin Institute and now in his current position with The Academy of Natural Sciences.

SUMMARY:Juneteenth at the Constitution Center
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJuneteenth marks our country’s second Independence Day. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending slavery in the United States. On June 19\, 1865\, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and nearly five months after the 13th Amendment was proposed (it would not be ratified until December 6\, 1865)\, enslaved people in Texas learned that they were free. \nAdmission to the Center is free on Juneteenth to celebrate this national holiday and rejoice in the celebration of those who fought to secure freedom for all.
