From 10 AM – 12 PM\, Mister Boom Boom’s Music Play Patrol will lead dance\, music\, and movement activities for young children. Swing by for free snacks\, check out the plaza’s new water misters\, and dance to selections by DJ C-Rob. At 11 AM\, join the historic ribbon-cutting ceremony with Fairmount Park Conservancy\, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation\, elected officials and community members\, marking the official debut of this tree-lined plaza complete with custom benches and a striking 6-foot-tall “FDR” sculpture. \nNATURE PHASE TOUR\n10 – 11 AM\, meeting location to be announced\nJoin the Fairmount Park Conservancy’s Landscapes team for a guided tour of one of the biggest environmental projects underway in Philadelphia! After nearly a century of human disturbance to the western edge of the park\, the Nature Phase of the FDR Park plan will restore diverse native vegetation to the area and establish a resilient landscape of wetland and forested habitat. This tour will take you past examples of this work in action\, including a burgeoning 33-acre tidal wetland and a “hummock-and-hollow” forested wetland. Along the way\, watch for birds\, insects\, and other species already embracing the new habitats! Note: this tour has limited capacity and requires additional separate registration here.  \nPADDLE BOATING\n10 AM – 2 PM at the FDR Boathouse\nAhoy! Stop by Edgewood Lake for a free paddle boating session\, hosted by Fairmount Park Conservancy in partnership with the Independence Seaport Museum. Boating sessions are first come\, first serve\, no experience needed! Your paddle boat can take you from the Boathouse to all corners of FDR Park’s largest lake. Note: Children must be accompanied by an adult and safely fit in a life vest in order to participate. \nBIOBLITZ\n11 AM – 1 PM at the Anna C. Verna Playground\nJoin us for a guided BioBlitz nature walk through FDR Park! Together\, we’ll explore the park’s diverse riparian habitat — while identifying as many plant and animal species as we can. Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or just curious about the outdoors\, this is a great opportunity to connect with nature and contribute to community science. Bring your smartphone\, water\, and your sense of wonder! \nWE WALK PHL\n11:30 AM – 12:30 PM\, meet at the Gateway Plaza\nLace up your sneakers and join the popular We Walk PHL social walking group for a stroll through FDR Park. Get your steps in\, enjoy park scenery\, and make new connections in this approximately one-hour walk. We Walk PHL is a citywide social walking program led by Fairmount Park Conservancy\, the Departments of Public Health and Parks & Recreation\, and volunteer walk leaders. FDR Park’s group meets on Tuesdays and Saturdays every week in May and June! \nFAMILY FIELD DAY\n11:30 AM – 2 PM at the Boathouse Lawn\nGame on! Stop by Boathouse Lawn for a free Family Field Day with sports activities for kids of all ages. Soccer\, football\, basketball\, baseball\, hockey — we’ve got something for every young athlete to try. There will also be pay-as-you-go food trucks for lunchtime refueling! Special thanks to our partners including Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative\, the Philadelphia Union\, the Philadelphia Eagles \, the Philadelphia Flyers\, EPYSA\, Philadelphia Youth Basketball\, Sigma Sharks Youth Organization\, Cool Wurld Organization\, and Let’s Rock Recess.

SUMMARY:Juneteenth at the Constitution Center
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJuneteenth marks our country’s second Independence Day. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending slavery in the United States. On June 19\, 1865\, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and nearly five months after the 13th Amendment was proposed (it would not be ratified until December 6\, 1865)\, enslaved people in Texas learned that they were free. \nAdmission to the Center is free on Juneteenth to celebrate this national holiday and rejoice in the celebration of those who fought to secure freedom for all. Museum programs will highlight the history of the holiday and stories of freedom fighters from the Reconstruction era like Frederick Douglass\, Harriet Tubman\, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper\, and more.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Solstice: Guided Hike + Meditation
DESCRIPTION:From their event page:  \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and ecotherapist and Lenape language keeper Krista Nelson on a two-mile hike along the wooded Boxers’ Trail in East Fairmount Park. The summer solstice signifies the longest and lightest day of the year. Dating all the way back to ancient times\, the solstice marks a mystical\, spiritually-heightened day when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky. Celebrated by many cultures and religions at festivals and ceremonies around the world\, it honors a deep sense of devotion to nature\, Mother Earth\, and the energizing power of the sun. \nDuring this hike\, we’ll welcome the longest day of the year by focusing on intentions set in the winter and spring. Those intentions are like seeds in our personal gardens of promise. Planted in the fertile soil of winter’s darkness\, they withstood the cold and rooted deep. In the spring\, they sprouted to face both the rain and the winds of change. Now is the time to let them shine in the summer light. We’ll stop by Randolf Creek where we can release into the water all that we no longer need\, and then with the setting sun\, we’ll share a fun tribute to the five major nature elements.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Guided Hike Series: Tree Tour with Andrew Kirkpatrick
DESCRIPTION:From their event page: \nJoin Fairmount Park Conservancy and Andrew Kirkpatrick\, Urban Greening Coordinator with Parks and Recreation’s Farm Philly Program\, for a two-mile tree identification hike along the Belmont Plateau Cross Country Course and the historic Trolley Trail. \nFrom sweetgums to tulip poplars to a variety of oaks— our urban forests are teeming with many tree species. On this hike\, we’ll learn to identify commonly found trees based on leaves\, branches\, and bark. We’ll take time to observe the body language of trees\, why they grow the way they do\, and what we can learn about the life of the forest. \nThis hike is part of our Second Saturday Guided Hike Series. These hikes occur from 10 AM–12 PM on the second Saturday of every month (May–November). All of these hikes depart from Belmont Plateau in West Fairmount Park. Please see below for the full schedule.
