Inside the Indego Bike Shop

It’s officially winter season, and contrary to expectations, it’s busy season here at Indego! The system runs 24/7, 365 days a year and there are 105 stations and 1,000 bikes that need to be taken care of. From fixing flat tires to refurbishments, learn about how we keep the wheels turning throughout the cold weather months.

WHAT WE DO

To keep the Indego fleet in tip-top shape, mechanics spend a great deal of time each month on inspections. Many of these inspections happen thanks to our wonderful and vigilant riders (like you!) who call and let customer service know about issues.

Here’s what happens when you call customer service with a bike issue:

  • The bike issue, bike number and location are recorded.
  • The bike is locked down for maintenance so it isn’t available for rental and so other riders don’t run into the same issue.
  • We send a balancer to pick up the bike from the station so it can be repaired ASAP!

After bikes are brought in, the team of hardworking Indego mechanics inspect the bikes and begin their repairs. For bikes that aren’t called in, the team heads out to stations across the city to perform inspections. Fun stats

  • An average of 57 bikes get inspected per shift. That’s 4 shifts/week= about 230 bikes!
  • Up to 100 bikes can get repaired each week
  • Steve (see below) has performed over 6,000 inspections since August 2015.

The winter may bring unpredictable weather and riding patterns, but the team here is ready to tackle any problems that come their way.

“From being a part of the street team to becoming a mechanic, I have a strong sense of how much Indego cares about its riders. As a street team member, I had the unique experience of seeing the customer service aspects and how Indego wants to be available for everyone. As a Mechanic, I see how much pride and hard work goes into keeping the bikes safe for everyone.”Randy L, Mechanic

“I love being able to ride my bike home every day and see people using the bikes that I build and repair. I take a lot of satisfaction in knowing the bikes get used often. I’ve been at Indego since the beginning and love the direction it has gone and all the successful growth!”Nate O, Mechanic Supervisor

“My favorite part of the job is problem-solving. In our shop, we see trends that are unique to our city and our usage patterns. Unlike a regular bike shop where specific customers have specific patterns, anyone can ride our bikes at anytime and that introduces some interesting challenges for us. Because these trends are unique to our city, there isn’t necessarily already an answer to many of the things that pop up. I am fortunate enough to work with a team that is able to provide support where they can.” – Jake S, Head Mechanic

“As a recent transplant from Nebraska, I love riding Indego to explore the city. And I love helping ensure others have the same opportunity to explore the city via bike as well. “- Mark V, Mechanic

“I love working at Indego because the work that I do every day physically impacts a user’s experience. The work I’m doing makes or breaks whether a rider gets to work or an appointment on time without a mechanical issue. I also enjoy the fact that users have the freedom of spontaneous travel.”Steve F, Mechanic
