Bike To Work: Views From The Bike

In honor of National Bike To Work Day on Friday, May 15th, we are highlighting a few members who use Indego for their daily commute.

Why do you ride Indego?

I’ve lived here for 12 years now, including college, and I owned a bike here for the whole time until last winter. I would ride the Schuylkill River trail, but I didn’t bike to work often for two reasons. One is that I live on the top of a long hill, and it got kind of annoying riding up that hill at the end of a long work day. The other is that there aren’t many places near my office where I could lock my bike and not worry about it all day.

I first was exposed to bike-sharing on a visit five years ago to Montreal, where the Bixi bike-sharing program had just launched. I realized immediately what a neat concept it was, and what it could be like in Philadelphia. Being able to pick up a bike at any station and drop it off at any other station makes it so easy to get around the city without worry or hassle.

Do you ride Indego to work? If so, how’s it going? (Details!)

Yes. I pick up a bike at the 40th and Market dock and go straight across Market Street. Some days, if I have a little extra time, I’ll go down to Spruce and over the South Street bridge. So far it’s going very well – there’s a docking station right across the street from the Philly.com/Inquirer/Daily News offices at 8th and Market.

What views do you see on your commute?

I work the morning shift on the sports desk at Philly.com, so I get to see the sun rise over City Hall when I ride down Market. If I have time to go over South Street, I get what I really believe is the best view anywhere of the Center City skyline.

Any tips for new Indego riders?

Wear a helmet. Please. Pretty please.

Also, don’t leave trash in the baskets. It’s not a good look.

Will you bike to work Friday, May 15th in honor of National Bike To Work Day?

Of course. But I might not if it’s raining. Hopefully the weather will be nice!
